Notes

Join us for our first pub church of 2018! Located at 2008 Justin Ln., in the Parish Hall of The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, this singular gathering brings folks of all backgrounds and beliefs together for conversation around the common table, complete with live music, food, drink and Communion. A meetup unlike any other, come see what the fuss is about! This kickoff gathering will feature legendary Austin artist, Federico Archuleta, interviewed by the incomparable John Burnett, NPR‘s southwest correspondent for the national desk. And music for the evening will come from Carrie Elkin, whose stellar live performances are a joy for all to behold. She’ll be joined by her husband, Danny Schmidt.

Federico Archuleta was raised in El Paso where he was influenced by both sides of the border. It was this cross-pollination of culture– from rock and roll album covers to Lucha Libre and comic books– that inspired him to express himself through art. Earning a “school of the streets” education, Federico’s work as a budding artist took him from the market squares of Ft. Bliss, TX to Guadalajara, Mexico to Las Vegas and many other cities. Here in Austin, he continues to lift up Latino culture with tributes to Cesar Chavez and other iconic Latino influences. In addition, you’ll see a his commissioned stencil work at local nightclubs and restaurants. This exposure has even landed him work with the Mexican soft drink company, Jarritos. Even while he’s working paying gigs, he’s still got an eye out for the perfect wall with the best traffic to express his next public image.

Our dear friend Carrie Elkin is one of those rare artists with both a tidal wave singing voice that electrifies listeners and a stage whisper writing voice that brings us to the edge of our seats. Like other seminal voices across music history, Elkin has the gift of projecting very personal intimate moments into transcendent universal experiences that move us all. She’s currently touring her 2017 release, The Penny Collector, her seventh record. Written in a year that was bookended by the birth of Elkin’s first child and the process of care taking her father through the dying process, The Penny Collector is a poet’s momentous stroll full circle around the human life-cycle in one single year. It’s a journey that is beautifully told, fragile and heartbreaking at times, joyous and raucous in others. And Elkin once again delivers the powerhouse vocal performance that people have come to expect, with delicate waves of intimacy that build to astonishing crests and crashes of intensity.

John Burnett is NPR’s Southwest Correspondent for the National Desk. His reports are heard regularly on NPR’s award-winning programs Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Weekend Edition. While John has covered almost everything imaginable in his lifetime as a decorated career journalist–the UT-Austin graduate has reported from more than 30 different countries since 1986 and earned more awards than we can count–he’s really been in the thick of things again lately, covering recent tragedies in places like Houston and Puerto Rico, and also continuing to focus on what’s happening right now on the Texas border.

Pub Church will happen every Sunday from this week until March 4, 2018. We are so grateful to Strange Land Brewery for providing our beer, to both All Saints’ Episcopal Church and The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection for your continued support, and to Home Cooked Fridays for providing our meal this week.
