Notes

Pub church fan favorite, Neil Blumofe, will join us again, this time to teach our pub church congregation a thing or two about Hanukkah. Joining us for this energetic finale will be Austin’s own Jewish music project, Mazel Tov Kocktail Hour. Join us for the exciting conclusion of our fall season!

You probably know Rabbi Neil Blumofe for his work with Liner Notes and Views and Brewshis well-known expertise on jazz musichis haunting renditions of the Psalms, or for his all-around coolness. The senior Rabbi at Agudas Achim, Blumofe is one of our city’s most cutting edge faith leaders. In addition, he knows more about jazz music than almost anyone else around. Come join us as Neil takes us deep into the Jewish faith’s most famous holiday.

Mazel Tov Kocktail Hour is a traditional Jewish music project, started in 2007 by Samantha Goldberg. Dylan M. Blackthorn, & Kronk (Sick). The band has traveled the world in many formations, learning tunes and the history/context of klezmer music and Yiddish folksongs. From Texas to Manhattan to Poland to Greece, they have played sold out venues, busked on the street, and shared Jewish music with many people. Mazel Tov Kocktail hour has studied in-depth with Sherry Mayrent of the Mayrent Institute for Yiddish Culture for most of their existence. They have been featured at the SA International Accordion Festival, Pecan St. Festival, Houston Pride Parade, Honk TX festival, many Jewish weddings all across the country, Bar/Bat Mitzfahs, as part of services and festivals at congregation Agudas Achim, schools, synagogues, churches, clubs, bars, cafes, birthday parties, dogs’ birthday parties, interfaith events, and anywhere else music can be played.

Since 2012, The Front Porch has hosted pub church, complete with live music, food & drink, open conversation and Communion. This fall, we’ll meet each Sunday at 5:30 PM in the Parish Hall at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, partnering with Strange Land Brewery to bring the pub to the church. A hot dinner is provided, courtesy of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Donations are encouraged.
