Dr. Kristin Neff, PhD is at the forefront of the “self-compassion” movement, an approach towards self-development that goes way beyond self-esteem: it’s a way of understanding self and others that has been adopted by world leaders such as the Dalai Lama, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and Brene Brown. Self-compassion is a concept borrowed from Buddhist psychology, and entails self-kindness, feelings of interconnectedness, and mindfulness. How lucky we are to have Dr. Neff join us on for this special edition of Pub Church! While currently teaching at the University of Texas in the Educational Psychology department, she speaks and teaches all over the world, and her popular Ted Talk and best-selling books have helped create a kinder world. She will share that when we feel compassion for ourselves and others, we realize that suffering, failure and imperfection are part of the shared human experience. Self-Compassion by Kristin Neff, Ph.D.

This evening’s artist is the soulful, heart-moving goddess of the swampy blues, Wendy Lorraine Colonna. As the Statesman put it: “Wendy Colonna is not just a singer-songwriter, she’s a force of nature.” Hailing from the gulf coast of Louisiana and calling Austin, TX home since 2000, Colonna is a regular southern renaissance woman: a seasoned troubadour, yogi, bookworm, adventurer, pollination ecology-enthusiast and hula-hooper. But it’s her songwriting and voice that draw in audiences in like bees to nectar. Now a Black Fret Major Grant recipient—she was honored with the award in December 2016.
